Player Power Rankings Explained
August, 26th 2014

One of the features we have that garners a lot of interest from new visitors and tennis fans is our proprietary Player Power Rankings. For those that are not familiar with Power Rankings from other sports, such as basketball or football, this type of ranking is our analyst's best measure of a players current strength at one particular point in time.

While power rankings do certainly give weight to a players overall win/loss record as well as their ATP rank, they also bring in a whole slew of other factors that we feel combine for a much better barometer of a players current form.

Some of these include the players recent trend in matches, how many quality wins or upset losses they have, what their Margin of Victory (MOV) has been, as well as their strength of scheduled opponent (SOS).

When you combine these with the basic ranking information you get a really unique view at the potential of a player from a statistical standpoint.

Official Beta Release of the Site!
August, 21st 2014

After many long months of work we've finally released the site for public access today. It's been a long road but we're very happy with what we've been able to produce for tennis fans and statistics enthusiasts. We're also extremely excited about what we have that is already in the works to be ready for the 2015 season. So stay tuned!

In the meantime, enjoy exploring the site, and we'd love to hear any feedback or suggestions. The discussion forums are a great place to share those and you can contact us via email as well. And for anyone who missed the introductory information on the site, here it is again:

Introduction: InDepthStats is the most powerful statistical analysis site currently available for professional men’s tennis statistics, match ups and relative player strength. It is important to understand which matches are included in our statistical databases, and why, in order to get the full benefit of the analysis we provide.

History: InDepthStats was conceptualized in late 2012 and finally came to shape in its current form in 2014. The database consists of men's tennis match results and statistics from Jan. 1, 2010 to the present, and is growing every day. Both with the continuous addition of each tournament's daily matches as well as backlogging historical matches played before 2010.

Database Matches: After much debate, the decision was made that only certain matches would be included in our men's tennis databases at InDepthStats. The list of matches currently included is listed here. Most notably you will notice that we have chosen NOT to include challenger tournament matches in our statistical calculations. The reason for this is essentially the large number of factors associated with these matches that cannot be easily normalized or quantified. This, however, does result in a limited number of statistics being available for analysis for some of the lower ranked players. A situation we are continuing to analyze and discuss moving forward with this project.
